LABORATORY PROCEDURES FOR MICROORGANISMS

REFERENCE NO.: M/1998/2.02

TITLE: RECORDING COLLECTION DATA

All parcels arriving at the collection and containing cultures are handled as stated in M/1998/1.06 Appendix 4. Cultures have to be registered by entering a serial or accession number, date of arrival, strain designation, name of sender, strain designation, reference given by the sender. Cultures are then forwarded to the responsible person which may be identified through consultation of a list of responsibilities.

The accession number is permanently bound with a specific strain and is never changed although the scientific name of the strain may change. It is good practice to assign a specific accession number only once irrespective of the later viability of the strain or whether the strain remains permanently in the collection. An example of an Accessioning Book is given in M/1998/2.02 Appendix 2.

An example of a method of storing information is given in M/1997/2.02 Appendix 1. In some collections the Accessioning Book [M/1998/2.02 Appendix 2] may be the same as the Day Book [M/1998/2.02 Appendix 1].
