Search hints

  Examples

Name             "Bacillus subtilis" (include double quotes when searching names including more than one word)
Include synonyms of Name in search
Other Fields   chitin

3. Click "Do Query"

NB When searching Cabri, certain search terms are extremely useful.
Please read the help file for more indepth information.
* The * symbol is a generic wildcard. e.g. To find everything beginning with 'temp', search with 'temp*', which would return entries containing 'temperature', 'temperate' etc.

Similarly use of the wildcard in the leading position can be very useful. e.g. searching for '*ase' would return entries containing 'endonuclease', 'lipase' etc.

NB The * is often useful in searching the Name field as most names of organisms are indexed as whole terms including spaces. When not using double quotes (see below), the * may be necessary to achieve a valid hit.
e.g. Searching for 'bacillus subtilis' might not give a result, while searching for '*subtilis' would. Using double quotes bypasses this problem.

" " If you wish to search for a string including a space in the search term then you may do so by enclosing it in double quotes. e.g. searching for "Bacillus subtilis" (including the quotes) will return all entries where the name Bacillus subtilis has been indexed as a whole term including the space. In general whole term indexing only occurs in the Unique Identifier and Name field of the databases.
However, the double quotes function only works when searching the 'Name' or 'Other Fields' sections and is not required when searching Unique Identifier (as they are always whole terms).
| and ! The symbols '|' (vertical bar) and '!' (exclamation mark) are the operators meaning 'or' and 'but not' respectively. They can be used to build up complex searches in conjunction with the previously mentioned operators. e.g searching with 'bacillus | therm* ! subtilis' will return all entries containing either 'bacillus' or anything beginning with 'therm', except those which also contain the word 'subtilis'.
