Appendix

REFERENCE NO: AHC/1998/4/1 Appendix 2

TITLE: SPECIAL PERMITS

For importation of cell lines into some foreign countries, some permits are mandatory (see section 1 for National and International regulations)

Example from DSMZ:

Importation of Cell Lines into the USA and Canada

USA: The importation of biological materials is regulated by United States Federal Law. Failure to obtain the appropriate permit may result in confiscation of a shipment at the port of entry. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has imposed restrictions on the importation of cell lines and animal fluids into the United States because of the potential importation of animal pathogens. For specific instructions on import requirements, contact the USDA at 301-734-8695. An import permit must be obtained from the USDA prior to the shipment: Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS), U.S. Department of Agriculture, Veterinary Services National Center for Import and Export, Import/Export Products, 4700 River Road, Unit 40, Riverdale MD 20737-1231; website:<HTTP: imexdir.html> or <www.aphis.usda.gov> ; document retrieval number: 301-734-4952; phone: 301-734-3277; Form 16-6A - MAR 95 (item numbers 1001 and 1002).

Canada: Importation into Canada now also requires a Permit to Import Material of Animal or Microbial Origin - Permis d`Importation de Matières d`Origine Animale ou Microbienne (form AAFC/AAC4603 95/11) which can be obtained from the Animal Health Division, Food Production and Inspection Branch, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Ottawa (Dr. Francine Lord is currently in charge, fax: 613-993-4334, e-mail:
